How Cancer Treatments Affect Fertility
While essential for fighting cancer, oncology treatments can compromise fertility and make
future pregnancy more difficult
In Women:
- Temporary disruption of ovulation
- Reduced egg qualitys
- Premature menopause (permanent infertility)
In Men:
- Alteration or destruction of sperm (temporary or permanent)
- Complete removal of the testicles or seminal ducts (permanent infertility in full removal)

Common Questions About
Oncofertility Preservation
It depends on the type of treatment and medical advice. In some cases, it is still possible, though results may be affected. That’s why it’s crucial to consult as early as possible.
Women diagnosed with cancer who want children in the future should consider egg freezing before starting chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or surgeries that could affect fertility. Performing the procedure earlier, ideally before age 40, increases the chances of success.
Treatment begins with ovarian stimulation lasting around 10 to 12 days, using injectable hormones and close monitoring through ultrasounds and blood tests. Once the eggs are ready, they are collected in a quick, painless procedure. At HOPE IVF, we work hand in hand with your treating oncologist to ensure that the medications used do not interfere with your diagnosis or treatment plan.
After you finish oncology treatment and your doctor confirms it is safe to attempt pregnancy, the eggs can be thawed, fertilized with sperm, and transferred as embryos via IVF.
With proper preservation, eggs can remain viable indefinitely. At HOPE IVF, we use vitrification, an advanced rapid-freezing method that prevents ice crystal formation, achieving survival rates of 98% compared to 55% with traditional freezing.
Success rates depend on factors such as your age at the time of freezing, the quality of the preserved material, and your reproductive health when the eggs or sperm are used.
For women, stimulation and egg retrieval usually take 2 to 3 weeks. For men, sperm collection and freezing can be completed in one or a few days.
